Scholarship Opportunities for PNG by John Rombo

Dear Koare Konda Kids,

Education is one of the major means for development, advancement, good and healthy living, paid jobs and to live a prosperous life in the future for yourself, your family, your community and Koare as a whole.  If you look at Koare, we do not have many educated people like what they have in other parts of Pangia/Ialibu or Kagua/Erave electorates.  We only have few children who have worked so hard to be where they are now.  Our present educated children made their way through an impoverished part of the world, that is Koare to where they are today.  It is through their parents' and family's personal sacrifices and sheer hard work in the gardens and raising the pigs.  Without them we would not be here like this seeing cities and enjoying good food.  While it is extremely hard to help each other in terms of financial support, we can give moral support and show children from Koare to look out for scholarship opportunities that are available anywhere in the world which would relieve their poor parents big time.  My own personal experience is that I was teaching at Kuare Primary School when I applied for a New Zealand Government funded and supported scholarship and thank God I was very lucky to win the scholarship.  When I had that opportunity I gave my whole self and being to work so hard, I mean extra hard.  That brought me this far.  You must be aware that paying of school fees out of your own pocket is painful and hurts because of the amount of money we earn as our salary. That means from our salary we cannot afford to pay huge sums for school fees. Due to school fee problems many of our capable children are out of school and now in their villages working the gardens and living a subsistence lifestyle.  From my own experiences I am happy to share with you how you can earn degrees basically for free at the expense of the scholarship providers.  The only fees I paid for education was in high school and my teacher training college.  However, even at the teacher training college I was earning K15.00 per fortnight which was a huge money in those days.  After that, other things that came into my life in terms of study is history because I have been doing studies on full scholarships which included: full school fees, book allowance, living allowance, insurance, return airfares and my family members' school fees.  There are many scholarships that are available in the world today that either support only the scholarship recipient or other scholarships provide for your family members as well and it comes as a package.  That means if you are lucky enough and strike a family supported scholarship you can take your entire family members for the duration of the scholarship; 2 years, 3 years, 4 years it does not matter.  If however you win the single person scholarship, you will have to go alone and make sacrifices by way of leaving your family back in PNG or in Koare.  Here are some scholarship opportunities that you can apply for and I am quite happy to provide more information in the coming weeks so you apply for many at the same time.  Do not hold on to this useful information please, and those of us who have access to this forum or internet try and help relay this scholarship information to other Koare Konda Kids so that they too can try their best and apply and if they are successful I am sure they will add numbers to this very community forum.  Here are the scholarship details:

Scholarships

In support of the Government of PNG's development priorities, the Australian Government and the New Zealand Government provide Australian and New Zealand scholarships to allow Papua New Guineans to study in Australia and New Zealand. Awardees are selected on the basis of the Government of PNG's development priorities and merit using a transparent process.

The scholarships aim to contribute to the long-term development needs of PNG to promote good governance, economic growth, and human development and to provide Papua New Guineans with the skills and knowledge to drive change and influence the development outcomes of PNG. After obtaining tertiary qualifications at participating Australian and New Zealand institutions graduates are required to return to PNG for a minimum period of two years to contribute to PNG development following the completion of their scholarship. Under AusAID and the New Zealand AID Programme's gender/equity policy, awards are allocated equally between men and women.  People with disabilities and their carers and professional associates, and people in the provinces, especially in remote locations are strongly encouraged to apply for awards.

The overall objectives of the scholarships programmes are twofold:

01To provide men and women with the skills and knowledge to contribute to PNG's economic and social development within the priority areas of National and Provincial governments.

02To provide men and women with the skills and knowledge to contribute to PNG's economic and social development within the private sector and civil society.
